ContentAudit is an online
utility designed for scanning files on your computer. It looks
primarily for 'rude words' in text readable files and filenames,
and then reports on the results recovered.
However ContentAudit does not find
or remove the most potentially incriminating 'evidence' of
all, the pornographic images, movies or other adult files
that can exist hidden on your hard drive, unless they have
an objectionable filename.
Snitch does everything that ContentAudit does, and much
more. Snitch actually checks and opens files, such as images
and movies, as well as compressed files, renamed files, internet
history, etc. Snitch scans image files for for the presence
of nudity, and sorts the results by 'suspiciousness'. Snitch
displays images for viewing, presents videos for playback,
accumulates and sorts internet URL history, allows reporting
and deletion of files, URL history and so forth.
Mere posession of some forms of adult material is a criminal
offence, and only Snitch
software is capable of searching your hard drive, and analyzing
files automatically to detect nudity in images, adult movies,
obscene or inappropriate text in readable files, and other
forms of undesirable content.
Snitch incorporates
a 'smart' algorithm designed to scan all images in the target
range and to prioritize them according to their 'suspiciousness'.
An adult image usually exhibits characteristic tones and distribution
that allow identification above other normal images. Although
any image analysis method that attempts to separate adult
images from standard images invariably classifies some images
incorrectly, the algorithm used by Snitch
is quite effective, and usually a computer that contains 'dirty
pictures' will show obscene or indecent pictures in the first
page of image results. This allows the user to quickly assess
whether the target computer requires further inspection.
This is where Snitch comes in handy; it can be used to detect
inappropriate internet behaviour, both directly, by checking
the internet browser access caches, and indirectly by examining
the computer for files that have been obtained using the internet.
In addition, files that have been introduced through other
channels, such as LAN, CDROM, floppy disc, compressed files,
email, and other internet methods that bypass the browser,
are easily detected by Snitch and rarely by any other system.
